HSBC Global Mining IndexThe HSBC Global Mining Index provides the international investor with a definitive, accurate benchmark for portfolio management and performance measurement of the mining industry. As at 31 January 2010 the Index consists of 190 constituent securities, representing the mining industries across 25 markets. The Index is reviewed quarterly to ensure all constituents remain representative of their respective categories and are liquid, internationally available, listed equities. New issues may be included in the Index, either following the first day of dealings or at the end of the quarter, depending on the relative importance of the issue. Cross - holding issues are addressed at the quarterly review. The index consists in general of securities with a market capitalization in excess of US$300 million. This stipulation ensures that a large number of very small, illiquid mining companies do not qualify for inclusion in the index. There are exceptions to this rule however, where secondary lines exist, and are liquid, they are included. Some smaller Latin American companies also qualify where their representation in the Index is deemed to be more important than the USD $3300 million cut-off point. *Source - HSBC Global Mining Index monthly analysis 31 January 2010. |
